William Rush, a Philadelphia sculptor, Revolutionary War veteran, and founder of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, modeled this terracotta bust of George Washington for the Academy's Sixth Annual Exhibition in 1817. The original exhibition label noted: "From the familiarity of the artist with Washington, his opportunities of comparing his work with the original, and his acknowledged talent, it is claimed that this bust is the most perfect likeness existing."
